Innovation and education events offer cooperation opportunities for Finland and Vietnam

A week of many activities between Finnish and Vietnamese actors took place in Ho Chi Minh City at the end of October, setting the way for future cooperation between Finland and Vietnam.

On the afternoon of October 26 Chairman of the Ho Chi Minh municipal People’s Committee, Nguyen Thanh Phong received Kari Kahiluoto, Ambassador of Finland to Vietnam.

At the reception it was pointed out that there remains much room for further cooperation between Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC) and Finland as well as Vietnam and Finland. Both the Chairman and the Ambassador expressed their hope to increase bilateral cooperation between the two countries in education and training, clean technology, safe water and waste water as well as share experiences in innovation and start-up management.

Week of Ho Chi Minh City Innovation, Startups and Entrepreneurship 2017 – WHISE 2017

The Ho Chi Minh City Innovation, Startup and Entrepreneurship Week (WHISE 2017) organised by the city People’s Committee and Finnish Embassy in Vietnam from October 23rd-28th was the largest innovation, science, technology, and startup event organized in Vietnam in 2017. The event was a unique joint effort between public and private sectors to showcase the vibrant startup and innovation scene in HCMC as the city of aspires to develop the city into a modern smart city.

Finnish Ambassador to Vietnam Kari Kahiluoto shared in the Opening Ceremony of WHISE 2017 that the relations between Vietnam and Finland have seen strong development over the past few years, not only in trade cooperation but also in regards to science, technology, and innovation.

Within the framework of WHISE 2017, the City People's Committee and the Embassy of Finland co-hosted a two-day event under theme "Together with Finland" in Ho Chi Minh City on 27th & 28th of October. This joint event marked a milestone in the collaboration between the governments of Finland and Vietnam.

Innovative solutions from Finland were showcased on 27th and 28th of October at the #Finland100 booth during the biggest technology and entrepreneurership conference in Vietnam @HATCH FAIR the Fifth - Ho Chi Minh City.

Under the Finland100 theme: Together - both the new Finnish companies and startups recently entering Vietnamese markets as well as Finnish companies already with a strong foothold in the country were operating under the same flag to give the Vietnamese audience an understanding of Finland's exceptional offering in innovative technology and services.

In summary, the innovative start-up conference and technology expo served as an opportunity for Finnish experts and companies to share their experience and solutions in the focus areas of HCMC including Education, Smart City Solutions, and Building a Startup and Innovation Ecosystem. On this occasion, The Slush GIA Contest was also introduced in Vietnam for the 3rd time to select impactful startups with innovative solutions for emerging markets and the winner also getting a tickets to SLUSH in Helsinki in November.

Furthermore, during the same weekend, the "Finnish School Day" was held at Ton Duc Thang University in order to introduce parents, teachers and educational officers to the approach of teaching and learning of Finnish education system. The newly established Vietnam-Finland International school will deliver Vietnam's and Finland's education and many programs will be taught by utilizinf Finnish teaching methologies.
